As a retired AF First Sgt, I'm researching my uncle's military history with the 450th BG/721st Squadron. His name is James N. Conner and is listed on your rolls. The only thing I know is paracuted out after July of 1944,was captured and spent the last months of the war as a POW. Any information is appreciated i.e. aircraft name, type, mission info and POW location. Thanks for the help...My mother and I appreciate the information as he passed away when I was a youngster and I don't know that much about him. According to his headstone in Conyers, Georgia, he was awarded an Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster. F/Sgt John W. Johnson, Retired

Please let me apologize for the "obscene?" remarks in the previous message. I assure you I double-checked the spelling before sending. How could such a thing happen? The information I was seeking was the records of the Maintenance people of the Group. I hope that this message gets through unchanged. Again, my apologies for any offense. AJBDAD@AOL.COM

Help! Does any "Cottontailer" have any information about two 723SQ B-24s that never returned to Manduria after their missions? One hulk was left at Capodichino, Italy in the summer of 1944 and another left on the Island of Vis in the fall of 1944. Perhaps there is someone from the Maintenance segment of the Group that has the do #$@%! Any help will be greatly appreciated. Regards to all the men of the 450th. P.S. Thanks to the Webmsters and their crew for such a beautiful website. AJBDAD@AOL.COM

See my previous entry of last week. Members of the 450th have responded. The 450th did send 28 B-24s to targets at Maribor, Yugoslavia on 14 October 1944, as did the 376th. S-2 reports from the 450th show no planes crashed over or near the target. The 376th reports one B-24 lost over target. The German summary for 14 October 1944 reports 14 Americam airmen recovered for burial at the civilian cemetery. Does anyone know what other, if any, combat units were active over or around Maribor that day? I am mystified by the discovery that more remains than on the plane I am looking into (seven) were reecovered by the German Army and/or police. There was heavy cloud cover over the target, above 17,000 ft. Were any low level bombers or other aircraft flying combat from Italy at that time? Is it possible some ground combat units could be active there at that time? I need help to solve this puzzle. Thx. Boyd

I want to know if any readers or members of the 450th was on a mission to Bomb the Maribor, Yugo.. marshalling yards and/or the Drava River RR bridge on 14 October 1944. I am researching the crash of a B-24 from the 376th HBG that day in the edge of Maribor. Four bailed; Seven went down w/the plane, Six were ID'ed by the US Army later. The seventh, 1 Lt. Clyde H. Armstrong, co-pilot is still MIA. USA mission summaries report only one B-24 downed that day. However, the German Summary reports several planes shot down that day, and they hauled by truck, Fourteen American airmen to the Maribor Funeral Palour for burial at the Civilian Cemetery. By letter of 23 January 1946, the funeral parlor reported that mortal remains of 14 American airmen, including the only one named, Donald Schwartz, serial # 11138782 T.44 were buried in the Pobreje Cemetery, Maribor and later,on 16 October 1946 (yes, two years and two days later.)were transfered to Belgrade, Yugoslavia. (US Military Cemetery) I need to learn the names of the other seven, the Germa

Being the first born of Col. Kenneth K. Lewis Jr., Ret., I am impressed with the knowledge this web-site has been given. Even an eldest daughter of a retired USAF officer didn't know all that her father had accomplished in his flying career. When he retired in 1965, was the first time I knew what he did in WWII. Thank you for having this web-site and if there is any future information you may have regarding either the 720th Squadron and/or my father I would deeply appreciate the information. Again, thank you.

My father, Anthony Alston, was a navigator in the 721st Bomb Squadron. He arrived at Manduria 2 Apr 44. He flew about 29 missions and was shot down over Wiener Neustadt in late May 44 and spent the next year in various prison camps. He eventually left for the US on 2 Jun 45. He is quite sick now and I am trying to get his story down for all the kids and grandkids. I am the eldest of his six sons and he has 2 daughters. He remarried and we have another 4 step brothers and sisters. Lots of grandkids and greatgrandkids will want to know the story. I am currently serving in the Army Reserve Dental Corp after doing some active duty during Vietnam. Anyone with info about life in the 450th or who may have known my dad or his pilot Herb Simler, co-pilot Francis Brownel or bombardier Woldemar George please get in touch.
