Subj: Fwd: JANUARY19,1945 TARGET BROD YUGOSLAVIA Date: 2/2/02 6:55:01 PM Eastern Standard Time ON THIS DATE,28 AIRCRAFT TOOK OF AT 9.00 AM FROM OUR BASE IN MANDURIA ITALY.OUR BOMBING WAS BY VISUAL METHOD IN A COLUMN OF FOUR BOXES AT 25,000 FEET. THE FLAK WAS ACCURATE,MODERATE AND HEAVY. OUR AIRCRAFT,THE DAISY MAE,WAS HIT NEAR NO.1 ENGINE LOSING A PART OF THE LEFT WING AND IMMEDIATELY WENT INTO A FLAT SPIN. WE WERE ON A BOMB RUN FROM THE I.P.(BATRINA 45.12N-17.39E) WITH THE BOMB BAY DOORS OPEN. THE PILOT (BOB HOGAN) AND THE ENGINEER (MYSELF) BAILED OUT THRU THE BOMB BAY AREA. THE REMAINING 9 CREW MEMBERS (INCLUDING THE PHOTOGRAPHER) WHO WAS ON HIS SECOND SET OF 50 SORTIES WERE CAUGHT IN THE FORCES OF THE FLAT SPIN AND DID NOT SURVIVE. THIS SHORT MEMO WRITTEN ON THIS DATE JANUARY 19,2002,HONORING THE MEMORY OF MY FLIGHT CREW,THEIR NAMES BEING AS FOLLOWS.......2nd LT. BOB HOGAN (PILOT), BIRMINGHAM,ALABAMA, 2nd LT.JOHN J. Great website. My Dad, Warren Scheel, was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 in the 15th AAF 483rd BG. They flew missions with 24's and very likely were from the 450th.

My father (Ralph Starks) was in the 723rd and the flight engineer on the Set 'em up. I see you have the plane listed but no photo. I believe I have a picture of the plane and I know I have a crew picture. I will try and send them to you in the next couple of months.

My dad passed on to the spirit world March/2000. He served in WW II in the European Theater. His name is John Tsosie. I'm his son trying to find more information on his tour of duty and what he did. We are Native Americans living in AZ. and we our proud of our veterans. I'm a veteran myself and served with 27th Engineer Airborne Battalion in Ft. Bragg, NC. The following is information from dad's discharge papers ORGANIZATION - 1152nd AAF BU; DECORATIONS/CITATIONS - European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Distinquished Unit Badge GO 3604 Hq 15 AF 44, Good Conduct Medal SO(Q)? 43 Hq 450TH Bomb G(?) 44; BATTLES/CAMPAIGNS - North Apenniney, Rhineland, Rome-Arno, Northern France, Southern France, Air Combat-Balkans Po Valley This is the only information I have for now. I am seeking information regarding my brother, Sgt. Loyd Whitley. He was AG in the 722nd Bomb Sq., 450th Bomb Grp. His Flight Officer's name was J.C. Word. He was missing over Italy in May of 1944 and later presumed killed in action. I do not have the name of his plane. If anyone knew him, I would love to find out any details regarding his Air Force life and death. I was a very young teenager at the time.

Thank you for the tribute to the men of the 450th. My dad, Salvatore Mauro, was a member of the 450th since it's inception in New Mexico. He passed away several years ago but I would like to think that he would have enjoyed viewing this site.

John Jeff has been, for many years, one of my best friends when I lived in Auburn, AL and now. We both belonged to the VFW there and were both Past District Governors of District 34S (Alabama), Lions International. I have been gone from there for three years now, but we keep in touch. I'm a little younger and was commander of a LCU (Landing Craft) at Inchon, Korea.
