My grandfather was in the 721st - Verne Nelson. He has been telling stories for years. We had a large landscape photo of his group framed a few years ago for Christmas. I think this is a great site - I would love to get him to see it sometime. Thanks for all your efforts!

I just learned of the website through Cottontales. What an excellent site! Thank you for providing this wonderful resource and tribute. My father was 1st Lt. Roger C. Saurer, 720th B-24 pilot, "Morning Star." He and his crew were MIA/KIA, March 9, 1945. I am thankful for the heroism and proud of the men of the 450th BG (H).

This is an amazing website. I have been trying to get any information on my Uncle-Willard M. Cornelius. He was a navigator in the 450th on a B-24 that went down over water near Italy on 5/12/44. Willard nor any other members of the crew or plane were ever found. From what I have seen on this website there was a target for that date for the harbor installations at San Stephano. If any one has any information regarding Willard or his crew please contact me. His sister (my mother) has learned more, although meager, information on the last few years of Willard's life than the previous 50 years combined as a results of efforts put forth by other people and websites like this. Thank you all.

My Uncle Dick, aka Richard J. Cain, was a 1st Radio Operator/Aerial Gunner with the 450 BG, 722 SQDN. His immediate Commanding Officer was William A. McWhorter, MAJ. His crew was shot down on 30MAY44(?) while flying a mission over Austria (Weiner Neustadt?). He was initially interred at Stalag 4 and ended up at Stalag 11B. He was liberated in May 1945. At the time he was shot down he was S/Sgt, having flown 39 combat missions for a total of 260 combat hours. He was eventually promoted to T/Sgt. I found the above info in old cigar box my grandmother gave to me. Unfortunately, my uncle passed away in the 80's and rarely discussed his combat days. He was an avid baseball player from Brooklyn. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who knew him between 14NOV42 when he enlisted and 22OCT45 when he was separated from active duty to fill in the gaps. Any crew photographs would be considered a treasure.
