WAR DEPARTMENT
THE ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE
WASHINGTON 25, D. C
AG 201 Yack, Edward
PO-CO 243031 14 September 1948
Mr.and Mrs. Charles Yack
4319 West 21st Street
Chicago, Illinois
Dear Mr. and Mrs.Yack:
I am writing you relative to the previous letter from this office in which you were regretfully informed that a Finding of Death had
been made in the case of your son, Staff' Sergeant Edward Yack, 16,141,564, Air Corps, and
that the presumptive date of his death bad been established as 10 March 1946.
As you were previously informed, your son was a crew member of a B-24 (Liberator)
aircraft which disappeared when the formation of planes in which he was flying,
went through heavy turbulent clouds over the Adriatic Sea on 9 March 1945. The
planes were on a combat mission to Maribor, Yugoslavia, but due to heavy clouds
over the target, proceeded to return to their base in Italy without dropping
tbeir bombs. It is indicated that just off the coast of Yugoslavia, your son's
aircraft collided with another B-24 bomber and ditched into the Adriatic Sea.
Native eyewitnesses asserted that no one escaped from the plane, and no
parachutes were seen. In view of the above 1nformation, it is logical to
conclude that Sergeant Yack was killed in action on 9 March 1945 when his plane
crashed into the Adriatic Sea after colliding with another airplane. The
records of the Department of the Army are being amended accordingly.
Pursuant to the provisions of Public Law 490, 77th Congress, 7 March 1942, as amended, official
reports will now be issued by the Department of the Army which will indicate
the actual date of his death as that shown above. The issuance of this official
Report of Death will not affect any payment or settlement of accounts which has
been made on the basis of the Finding of Death.
My continued sympathy is with you in the great loss you have sustained.
Sincerely yours,
EDWARD F. WITSELL
Major General
The Adjutant General of the Army
