Athens veteran Francis Crane who this past week was awarded France’s highest honor for his military service in World War II.

The 87-year-old Crane received the Knight of the Legion of Honor medal — recognized as the highest honor that France can bestow, during a ceremony Saturday at Athens VFW Post 3477.

A navigator, who enlisted in the military in 1944, Crane completed 50 missions in Europe, including Italy and Southern France, and received numerous awards for his service from the U.S. government.
